Revision Rhinoplasty: second rhinoplasty

A revision rhinoplasty may be necessary if:

• the aesthetic shape does not meet expectations (e.g. inharmonious profile, irregular nose bridge, crooked or unnatural tip)
• functional problems exist (restricted nasal breathing, collapse of the nostrils)
• Scarring or improper technique during the initial operation can affect the structure of the nose
• too much or too little tissue has been removed
• there is an asymmetrical or unstable result

A revision rhinoplasty is technically much more complex than an initial procedure because:

• Scar tissue and missing structures complicate the anatomy,
• cartilage from the nasal septum is often no longer sufficiently available,
• transplants (e.g. from ear or rib cartilage) are often necessary,
• the natural stability of the nose must be restored.

• Open technique: Standard for revision operations, as it provides a complete overview of the altered structures.
• Cartilage transplants: Often necessary to restore missing stability (usually rib or ear cartilage).
• Piezo technology (ultrasound): Particularly gentle for bony corrections in order to be able to work precisely and gently on the tissue.
• Preservation approaches where possible: In some patients, nasal bridge preservation methods can also be used in a second procedure.

• Duration of surgery: 2-4 hours, depending on the initial situation and complexity.
• Fit for society: after approx. 10-14 days
• Thread tension: after 5-7 days
• Final result: visible after approx. 12 months, fine swellings may persist longer.
