Postoperative care
How to support your recovery
A surgical procedure is always a shared journey. The operation itself is only one part—proper aftercare is just as important.
Your postoperative care plays a key role in how smoothly your recovery progresses and how long-lasting your aesthetic results will be.
By consistently following Dr. Philipp Mayr’s recommendations, you create the best conditions for a lasting, beautiful result.
These recommendations will help support your recovery:
Immediately after surgery (day 0)
- After waking, you should drink plenty of fluids and eat light, easily digestible meals.
- Light physical activity is permitted—avoid sudden movements, bending, or straining.
- Cool the treated areas regularly, ideally using a cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth.
- When lying down, keep your upper body slightly elevated (e.g. with two pillows).
- Do not go home alone—have someone accompany you and stay with you for the first 24 hours.
During the first 7 days
- Rest is essential—avoid physical exertion, bending, or lifting heavy objects (over 5 kg).
- Only take medications that have been approved by us.
- No aspirin, Thomapyrin or similar active ingredients – these increase the risk of bleeding.
- If possible, sleep with your upper body slightly elevated.
- No sauna, no solarium, no direct sun.
- Light skin care is permitted, please only use make-up after our approval.
- We offer optional ultrasound therapy to reduce swelling and hematomas – please feel free to contact us.
Suture & dressing care
- The first follow-up appointment usually takes place on the 1st day after the surgery.
- Stitches are typically removed after 7 to 15 days – depending on the procedure and region.
- Please only change or remove bandages after consulting us.
Scar care & skin protection
- After removing the stitches, start with scar care – e.g. with a recommended silicone gel or a medical healing ointment.
- Protect the scar from direct sunlight for at least 6 months. Use a high sun protection factor (SPF 50+) every day, especially on the face.
- After the dressing has been removed, an overnight taping may be recommended for certain procedures (e.g. after rhinoplasty).
- Please avoid rubbing or stretching the treated area during the early healing phase.
Nutrition & Behavior
- Avoid alcohol, nicotine and caffeinated drinks for the first few days if possible.
- Eat an easily digestible and protein-rich diet to support the healing process and drink plenty of water or unsweetened tea.
- Avoid foods that put a strain on your circulation.

Information on surgery costs, billing and insurance
If there is a medical indication (e.g. a crooked nasal septum with breathing difficulties or a visual field restriction due to excess skin on the upper eyelid), the health insurance company may cover part of the costs. Please note: the entire elective doctor’s bill is never covered by health insurance.
In order to clarify this, patients must submit the relevant documents to the health insurance company themselves before the operation. We will be happy to provide you with these documents on request.
If you have health insurance approval, you must first pay the invoice from Dr. Philipp Mayr’s practice yourself. You then submit the invoice to your health insurance company. If you also have private supplementary insurance, you can also apply for a contribution to the costs here – after confirmation from the compulsory insurance company.
We ask for your understanding that the settlement with health insurance companies and insurance companies is to be carried out exclusively by the patients themselves.
Tax deductibility
If there is a medical indication, medical expenses can be claimed for tax purposes as an extraordinary burden as part of the employee tax assessment. Current information on this can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Finance:
Extraordinary expenses with deductible
Please clarify with your tax office or tax advisor in each individual case whether and to what extent tax consideration is possible.
⚠️ Important note: Surgeries that are performed solely for aesthetic reasons (e.g. lower eyelid lift, breast augmentation, removal of a nose hump) are not reimbursable by health insurance companies and are also not tax-deductible. In these cases, the costs must be borne entirely by the patient.
Installment payment and financing
All invoices for operations must be paid at least 10 working days before the date of the operation. A deposit will be invoiced when the appointment is made, which will be deducted from the total amount.
Please note: Payment in installments directly at the surgery is not possible.
However, there are external providers that enable the financing of aesthetic operations, e. g. https://beautykredit.at/ or https://medkred.de/
Financing is arranged directly with the respective lender; there is no affiliation with Dr. Philipp Mayr’s practice.
Sick leave or vacation
If there is a medical indication and the operation has been approved by the health insurance company, patients can apply to their family doctor for a sick note for the duration of their recovery. On request, we will issue the necessary documents postoperatively.
⚠️ Please note: In the case of purely aesthetic procedures, there is no entitlement to sick leave. In this case, leave must be taken for the operation and the recovery period.
First and second consultation: Your path to a safe decision
Initial consultation – the basis of every treatment
The initial consultation forms the basis for every treatment with Dr. Philipp Mayr and his team of experts. Your wishes, expectations and any complaints are discussed in detail.
A detailed medical history is taken, an examination is carried out and possible treatment methods and alternatives are explained.
Combination with treatment for minimally invasive procedures
In the case of minimally invasive treatments – such as Botox treatments – the consultation can be combined directly with the treatment if desired.
In this case, the consultation fee is already included in the treatment price.
If you decide against immediate implementation after the consultation, an initial consultation fee of 150 euros will be charged. However, this will be credited within six months if the corresponding treatment is booked.
Visual planning for surgical procedures
Especially in the field of rhinoplasty, it is helpful for many patients to be able to imagine the possible result in advance.
Dr. Philipp Mayr works with a computer simulation that realistically shows what your nose could look like after the operation. This gives you a clear picture of whether the planned changes meet your expectations.*
Sketches or markings are also used for other procedures – depending on the issue – to clearly illustrate the expected result.
Second consultation – safety & clarity before the procedure
In the second consultation, unanswered questions are clarified and the operation is discussed in detail using the information sheet. The procedure, possible risks, the healing process and what to do before and after the procedure are explained in detail.
In addition, organizational points such as costs, scheduling and aftercare are explained transparently.
This allows you to make your decision with the greatest possible certainty and clarity.
*We would like to point out that a computer simulation is a summary of the wishes and goals discussed during the consultation, but is not an exact reflection of the final result.
